This game! I was on the look out for some spoopy games to celebrate the month of October. A few days ago, Youtuber, Matt McMuscles posted a video on this very game. It was then that I decided to check it out for myself. Only recently have I finished the game and I must say that I was very satisfied with this game.Story:The story starts off with our protagonist, Jez, being dropped off at Camp Sunshine with the promise of a good time. Almost instantly, things go south for Jez when he wakes up in the middle of the night to discover that almost the entire camp has been slaughtered by a psychotic bear. Upon discovering a diary page, does Jez realize that there is something more devious going on than just a psycho running around killing people. The story is nothing to write home about, but it is still a satisfying story to play through. There is also a sub story about the things Jez was facing back home with his parents. It's here that I wished was more touched upon so we could connect more with Jez as a character. Other than that, the story was okay.Gameplay:The game is set in the Camp Sunshine campgrounds. Navigating the map is easy enough with an over the top camera perspective. You can move using the arrow keys, WASD, or even the mouse. There is also a stamina system that depletes when your character sprints. This meter drains fairly quickly and takes a while to recover. Over time stamina will regenerate or you can use items to recover your stamina. Managing stamina is important for when the killer is nearby if you need to make a quick getaway. I'd personally advise against sprinting when you're alone, since you may need to run away at a moments notice since the killer can spawn anywhere. There is also a battery meter for your flashlight. The longer you use the flashlight, the more it depletes. It can be replenished using batteries found in the world. The light illuminates in a cone in front of you which is good to see more of what's ahead. However, if the killer catches you with the light on, he will sprint to you rather than walk to you. This makes using the flashlight dangerous as well. It is best to pay close attention to sound cues or ever observe the darkness around you if you can see him. When you see or hear him, immedietly turn off your flashlight. The crux of the game is revolved around fetch quests for certain NPCs. Usually these NPCs have important story related items to give you if you help them out. They may ask you to collect a certain amount of objects or just one object in particular from the other side of the camp. In some of these places there may even be puzzles. They are just right in difficulty and length. They range from sliding puzzles to pipe puzzles. Music:The music is a real joy to listen to. As far as I'm aware, all the cabins in the campgrounds have their own track. If they don't then the ones that do repeat aren't very noticeable. Most of the tracks are very John Carpenter-esque synth tracks. The best part of the soundtrack is the song that plays in the end credits. I bought the soundtrack just for that track.Extras:This game is LADEN with horror callbacks and references from Friday the 13th to Nightmare on Elms Street. A couple of non horror references are there too like Terminator. If you are a fan of 80s movies and video games you will catch all of them. There is also some hidden extra quests you can do that aren't vital to the story. Who knows, you might get something nice by completing them. Conclusion:I highly recommend this game. The game is well worth the $4.99 and it's a fantastic game to play especially in the month of October. I also recommend the soundtrack too.. I bought this game with my last .49 cents on the steam summer sale.) Camp Sunshine is a pixelated slasher game made in RPG Maker. The game had real potential, the strong buildup and the 80's horror refrences were good and all. The killer's one-liners are a little stupid, but not terrible. What really stopped me from playing this game were the quests. You have to collect a bunch of diary pages so you can find quest items. Every quest goes like this:1. Find NPC with a diary page.2. NPC says I need to go on a fetch quest so that I can have the page.3. Rather than saying there's a killer on the loose and that we should go get help, Protagonist accepts the quest.4. Go off and do the quest.5. Come back and the NPC is dead, I simply loot the page from their corpse.6. Repeat until you have all the pages.2/10. Now I'm not one for horror games at all, but this game is AWESOME. I loved the atmosephere that was sensational, the constant dread of been stalked by a giant stabby teddy bear with an overwhelming bloodlust was spot on. You get the cues of when he's near you giving you 1 or 2 seconds to plan on what to do really testing your abilities to find saftey or find a way around the murder bear. The sounds and music are something else entirely, the squeltching sounds walking through blood and guts changed to when you are walking on floorboards. I will admit that the walking sounds outside can be a little repetative but its something that can be overlooked. The music takes me straight back to the old classic 80's horror movies giving me chills. There are some nice nods to the classics in here like Nightmare On Elm Street, Childs Play, Poltergeist as well as a few others I've yet to come across as of yet (I'm pretty sure theres more if the movie posters are anything to go by).All in all I would highly reccomend this game to anyone who likes 16-bit games, horror or just looking for easter eggs. And to think that this game was made in RPG Maker MV is amazing.10/10. For three bucks (or even cheaper, if on sale), you can't beat it. It's a cute little game with an 80's slasher horror vibe (tons of little references to 80's flicks and games). It's relatively short, and the story is cliche, but I found myself playing all the way through it regardless. If you're looking for a short game with a spooky vibe to play for Halloween or something, definitely worth checking out. The gameplay is simple: Walk around, interact with things, find items, and avoid enemies. The game is semi open-world in that you can tackle the majority of the item-collecting around the camp in whatever route you choose, however the key story moments play out in the same places.. Don't let the fact that this game was made with RPG Maker put you off, it's actually a very enjoyable experience.Camp Sunshine thrusts you into the shoes of Jez, a boy being sent to summer camp while his parents figure out stuff between the two of them. Jez arrives, meets a few people, and then settles in for the night. Upon waking he discovers that there is something very wrong going down at Camp Sunshine -- bloody bodies are everywhere, and that's just the beginning of this nightmare. Your job is to guide him through Camp Sunshine finding the various clues, pages, etc. that open up more of the story as you progress. The story is engaging enough to keep you pushing through the game and the difficulty isn't so bad that you can't handle things. My advice for new players would be that if you're looking for JUST a story experience then play this on Easy. You will literally find so much supplies throughout the game that getting hit or using up batteries isn't an issue. I played on Easy so I can't say how much harder the other difficulties are but if you are looking for something that isn't a 100% cakewalk seek out Normal/Hard mode. There are some minor frame stutters in the game at times as well but they aren't too terrible to deal with. Dodging/running away from the enemy is also not terribly hard.A final note about this game: It's hidden gems like these that make you think twice before overlooking RPG maker games for the sole reason they were "made in RPG maker", so I want to say thank you to the creators for creating this little gem.. I really, really, truly, thoroughly enjoyed playing this game. I've played quite a few horror games recently, just looking for the right one to get me even slightly startled. This was it. This was the game that did the trick. The story was great, the gameplay was fun and engaging, the controls were simple, nothing was overly complicated to figure out but it still required some thinking, the throwbacks to 80's horror movies was awesome, and overall, the game was just a massive hit for me. I loved the animated scenes, I loved the theme, I loved everything about this game. The voice acting was spot on and the Scene in the house with the woman calling for help was brilliantly done. 10/10, Very well voice acted and very realistic. Well thought out, well done. I can tell that a lot of hard work and planning went into the creation of this game, and I can appreciate that. I can't wait to see what comes next!- Crankage Games (Developer of the Comedy RPG Metal as PHU K)
